Molecular techniques to map farmer and breeder preferences - an innovative approach towards participatory plant breeding

چکیده

www.bioversityinternational.org Assessing the genetic variability of crops is required to identify and develop cultivars (cultivated varieties) suitable for speci c growing conditions and speci c economic, social and environmental needs. Modern breeding relies on the identi cation of DNA regions that control complex traits of agronomic interest, such as resistance to drought, yield and plant height. Once those are identi ed, molecular tools can be applied to enhance the selection process and speed up the development of new varieties. The identi cation of such regions, called association mapping, is based on integrating molecular data with extensive phenotypic data (i.e. the observable characteristics of a crop).

Plant breeding for local food systems: A contextual review of end-use selection for small grains and dry beans in Western Washington

The rapid growth and co-option of the local agriculture movement highlights a need to deepen connections to placebased culture. Selection of plant varieties specifically adapted to regional production and end-use is an important component of building a resilient food system. Doing so will facilitate a defetishization of food systems by increasing the cultural connection to production and consum...

Participatory breeding, an approach for sustainable production of new rice cultivars in Iran

Over the past 50 years, thousands of rice varieties have been introduced by plant breeders to agricultural communities all over the world. Despite the improvement of attributes such as grain yield and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses, a significant portion of farmers still prefer local varieties over the improved cultivars. The main reasons for this perference are the absence of a dire...

Farmer Plant Breeding from a Biological Perspective: Implications for Collaborative Plant Breeding

Plant breeding by researchers has become increasingly isolated from the plant breeding of farmers. Collaborative plant breeding (CPB) offers the possibility of bringing these two plant breeding traditions together to increase the usefulness of new crop varieties to farmers, especially small-scale farmers working in stress environments with limited external inputs. This paper presents a framewor...
